About the "Bear Valley Boulder Bash"

top

Some of the best climbing in Bear Valley is on the numerous granite boulders scattered throughout the region. In celebration of this fine resource we host an outdoor bouldering contest at the Hell's Kitchen site which was recently published in the Supertopo "Northern California Bouldering" guidebook*.

Over 100 climbs will be included in the contest ranging from 5.6 to V10 and beyond. We have specifically designed the contest for all ability levels, including the kids.

For those "uber-strong" individuals we will have a handful of unclimbed problems scoped out to tempt new route development in the area.

In general there is a lot of potential for new bouldering development in the Bear Valley area. The Hells Kitchen area is sample of what's out there and hopefully will spark the interest of some motivated climbers. We will gladly steer you in the right direction.

* - you can purchase this guidebook at the MAS online store.

Sunday Climbing Workshops & Adventures top

On Sunday, October 4th, Mountain Adventure Seminars (MAS) is offering a special series of outdoor rock climbing programs. All "Workshops" are $75 (regularly $125) and run from 9 AM - 3 PM. "Adventures" range in price and time so read below to learn more. Pre-registration is encouraged and a $5 discount is being offered for all programs registered before August 31st

Gear and Anchor Workshop
This clinic covers the art of placing gear. We'll use nuts, hexes, tri-cams and camming devices. These skills are useful for many outdoor rock climbing applications including top-ropes, lead climbing, multi-pitch and big wall anchor construction.  After we cover the basics, expect to get "hands-on" practice and feedback from professional rock climbing instructors. $75 (regularly $125)

Climber Self Rescue Workshop
Learn the essentials of avoiding an epic on the rock. This clinic starts with accident prevention then moves onto the all important "belay escape". Learn how to get out of a belay safely when the rope is being tension by an injured climber. Then learn and practice skills for lowering and rappelling past a knot. Good idea to invite your climbing partners along for this clinic. $75 (regularly $125)

Crack Climbing Workshop
For most of us crack climbing is not as natural as face climbing and requires focused training to master the subtleties. Participants will have opportunities to climb different crack sizes, from fingertips to off-widths, and receive tips and coaching from professional instructors. Special attention will be placed on jamming, liebacks, and opposing forces. $75 (regularly $125)

Youth & Family Climbing Adventure
Climbing is natural for kids, or is it that kids climb naturally?  Regardless, rock climbing is fun and can be a great way to enjoy the great day outdoors with the entire family. Parents are encouraged to join in the fun and can either watch or do some climbing with the group. MAS instructors receive many accolades for creating a safe and supportive setting for youth groups and enjoy helping kids experience the thrill of outdoor rock climbing.. $40 (10 AM - 3 PM)
